About The Leghorn

Journal of Contemporary Southern Humor

The Leghorn is a journal of contemporary Southern humor, conceived in 2023 and launched in 2025 to explore and expand what Southern wit can be in the modern age. We celebrate the everyday, the strange, the sharp, the understated, and the over-the-top. From back-porch storytelling to cultural satire, our voice is shaped by the rhythms and contradictions of the South itself—its warmth, absurdity, tension, poetry, and pride.

We take no positions on politics, religion, or cultural issues, but we welcome writers who can find the humor within them. We’re not here to reinforce worn-out stereotypes, but we’re not here to sanitize anything either. We believe the South is big enough to laugh at itself and complex enough to deserve better jokes.

Some of our stories are about the South; others are simply told through a voice shaped by it. What ties it all together is a perspective that’s rooted, restless, and a little bit sideways. If it makes you laugh, wince, think, or nod in recognition, it probably has a home here.

We’re new and growing fast as we build a home for contemporary Southern humor, one story at a time. We’re always looking for writers, cartoonists, and humorists with a distinct voice and point of view who want to help shape this publication as it takes flight. If you’ve got a sharp eye, a Southern sensibility, or a good joke with teeth, we’d love to read your work. Visit our submissions page for more information.
